I live in a somewhat large city in our state. People come here from all over the US to work in the technical industry. I love the city, but have really hoped for some time now that I would one day get a chance to live somewhere a little cheaper. My plan has been to continue reading up on the cities located nearby to find one that is smaller and offers more options when it comes to expenses.
I have looked in all different directions within a 100 mile radius. I have been spending much of my time focusing on the Round Rock area. While it is a growing city, it is much smaller in size than where I live now and the cost of living is very low. The city is large enough that there are many popular chain restaurants and other businesses there that you will not find yourself forced to drive hours to the nearest large city for good food, fun and culture. What surprised me most is that there are a good number of companies that offer electricity service. The city I live in has only once choice, and that can be a pain when it comes to cost. Curious about whether I could save money every month on electricity costs, I made up a list of questions and called each of the questions.
I quickly learned that I could save up to fifty percent each month over the cost that I pay now. Aside from the lower cost of living (including home prices), I would also save at least $200/month on my utilities. That was the deciding factor for me. Moving there would allow me to have extra money every month to put toward investments, a new car, a yearly vacation or whatever I decided to use the savings for. This was a no brainer for me, and I am already in contact with a real estate agent there so that I can move as soon as possible.
